BEACH BLISS AT THE HOLIDAY INN RESORT PHI PHI ISLAND

If you’re looking for paradise beaches in Phuket you may be disappointed. However, the neighbouring island of Phi Phi (2 hours by ferry from Phuket) will offer up powder sand and turquoise sea.  My sister-in-law recently returned from a 6 night stay at the Holiday Inn Resort Phi Phi and shares her tips for a stay at this laid-back resort.

When did you go?

We went for 6 nights in mid December.  The weather was mixed with a few sunny days but mostly overcast.  We were there with my husband, 3 year old and 15 month old.

How did you book it?

I booked the hotel directly online and chose an interconnecting beachfront bungalow. In addition, I requested a travel cot. Included in the price of the room was breakfast.

How do you get to the Holiday Inn Phi Phi Resort?

There are several options to access Phi Phi from Phuket.  You can get a public ferry (2 hours) to Tonsai Pier and then a longboat (45 mins) to the resort which is a bit of a mission.  I emailed the hotel to find out if there was a better way, especially as I had two young kids in tow.  You can either get a private speedboat or slightly cheaper shared speedboat and the price includes transfer from the airport (one hour on the boat).  This latter option was much more convenient for us!

What were your first impressions of the resort?

As you first approach the resort, you are met with a beautiful beach – white sand and turquoise sea. The whole resort is very unpretentious and down to earth.

What was the Beach Bungalow like?

We booked two interconnecting King Beachfront Bungalows. There is a path that connects the Beach Bungalow to the beach. The room is basic but very clean, comfortable and spacious with air conditioning.  There is a double bed in each room and they provided an extra cot.  Outside is a spacious terrace with 2 chairs and a bench/sunlounger.

What are the facilities like?

There is a medium sized pool which is good for kids and a small shallow kids pool.  There is also a gym and spa. You can choose to have massages on the beach or through the spa.  I highly recommend the Thai herbal massage!

How’s the Kids Club?

The Kids Club was recently renovated and is jungle book themed.

There’s an astro turf area with outdoor trampoline and a main playroom.

There’s also an open-air room with table tennis and pool.

There are 2 full time members of staff and over 5s can be left unaccompanied. Although our kids were under the age limit, we befriended the staff and they were happy to look after Freddy and Jude. They do run an official programme with activities e.g. t-shirt painting, umbrella painting but this depends on how many kids show up.

How’s the beach?

This is a beautiful stretch of beach, not overcrowded and seemingly just for guests of the Holiday Inn. It’s quite small and there are also palm trees that you can clamber over, dotted with a few hammocks.

How’s the food?

The hotel has one main restaurant.  We ate breakfast there every day which was fine. However for lunch & dinner, we went to neighbouring Thai restaurants.  Jasmin’s has excellent food and does great cocktails. Cafe de Jasmin has western food including takeaway pizza.

You can walk 45 minutes to the local village where they have cafes, massage places.

Anna’s tips for a stay at the Holiday Inn Resort Phi Phi Island

  • Get a beachfront bungalow. The rest are set back in the forest
  • Eat at the local Thai restaurants over eating at the hotel
  • You might get restless if you’re there longer than a week
  • Get the speed boat as opposed to the main ferry (worth the extra $$)
  • Bring all your baby gear as there are not many shops close by
  • Get takeaway pizza from Jasmine’s for picnic on the beach
